JANUARY  The Elephant Man  Written by Bernard Pomerance

Directed by Susan Grilli

FEBRUARY  Women Behind Bars  Written by Tom Eyen

Directed by Patrick Falco

In this hilarious satire on B movies of the 1950's, Mary Eleanor, an innocent duped into crime, lands in the Greenwich Village Woman's House of Detention which is presided over by a massive matron with a taste for sadism and female flesh. Poor Mary Eleanor ends up hardened and cynical, but that's just the way it was in the movies.

"Sex is rampant and comically cheerful!... A delirious evening of Grade A tom foolery!" N.Y. Times.

"Hysterically, paradoxically, fascinatingly, diabolically funny!" N.Y. Daily News.

***please note:  Sideman has been postponed.  We are producing in it's place:

A drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty, THE GLASS MENAGERIE is one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre.

MAY  Pathetique'  Written by Sinan Unel  Venue to be announced

This gorgeous work was given a reading last year by Counter Productions.  I am thrilled to premier this play, as a full production as the final piece of our winter 2010 season.

The play, which explores the connections between art, the artist’s personal life and his audience, tracks between the years of 1893 and 1903, beginning with the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony Pathetique, considered by many to be his most emotionally powerful and mysterious work.

Only a few days after the premiere, Tchaikovsky himself died in mysterious circumstances.

From there the play looks to his brother and nephew, who are still struggling to endure the storm of gossip and speculation prompted by his death. Some believe the composer was condemned by a court of former schoolmates, who coerced him into taking his own life when they learned of his homosexuality.

Ünel’s plays have been produced in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, London, Germany and Austria. Both “Pathetique” and his 2008 work “The Cry of the Reed” were performed at the Breaking Ground Festivals presented by The Huntington Theater Company in Boston. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the New England Theater Conference’s John Gassner Memorial Award.

Along with Mainstage Winter Programming, we are very pleased to announce

McNeely Myers will portray Joan Didion in

The Year of Magical Thinking

We are very happy and proud to announce a new director to our roster of artists.

Of course, I am very honored to have Patrick Falco on board directing Women Behind Bars - as only Patrick can!

Directing The Glass Menagerie, Jim Dalglish;  Award-winning playwright and currently, Managing Director of WHAT, will be joining us this winter.  Jim has been instrumental in joining Counter Productions' efforts to continue winter programming and we look forward to working with him on an exciting directorial interpretation of this acclaimed work.
