PRODUCTION REVIEWS:
SOUVENIR “Unusual 'Souvenir' a keeper... Is she self-delusional? Is she demented? You can decide for yourself. At its core, "Souvenir" hinges on expectations and perceptions. People who sing tell me that nothing is harder for a soloist than to intentionally sing off-key. Abt does this charmingly.
Thomas is a skillful pianist and a low-key foil for the exuberant Abt. He provides the sanity on stage. She is the fantasy. Indeed, the play is aptly subtitled: "A Fantasia on the Life of Florence Foster Jenkins." Director Susan Grilli, of Counter Productions, has put together an audience- pleaser." Cape Cod Times
"How can something so wrong be so right? No, not a tawdry backstreet love story but an out-of-key musical, “Souvenir,” that manages to miss hitting almost every note and yet still entertains and ultimately asks a few gentle questions about the meaning of art. ...Thomas shows a good sense of comic timing as he provides the foil to his patron’s musical malapropisms. But it is Mary Abt as Florence Foster Jenkins who owns the stage. A terrific singer in real life, Abt throws it all aside to open up, wail and hit painful notes all night. Abt was delicious in her spirited but deliberately flawed performances, and when she stopped singing her acting was so nuanced, her persona carried such gravitas that she was at times breathtaking.
Special praise to costumer Ray Lajoie. Susan Grilli directs and gets impressive first-time dramatic performances from Thomas and Abt. This finishes out the first winter season for Counter Productions and leads to hopes for more from this new company." Provincetown Banner
DOUBT “Kevin Hardy's set design is impeccable... But just as impeccable are the performances of the actors playing the staff there, especially Broadway actress Glynis Bell's Sister Aloysius, Tim Babcock's Father Flynn is passionate and empathetic; Dakota Shepard shines as the young, idealistic nun and Sallie Tighe a fierce performance as a black mother in the 1960s " Cape Cod Times
"Counter Productions’ first offering of its winter series, John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt,” is a big dive into the deep end of the theatrical pool that earns high scores for taking on a complex play and giving it a dynamic and compelling production. Kudos to the four actors and to director Susan Grilli for bringing this tapestry of suspicion, accusation, moral ambiguity and lack of closure so deftly to the stage. This is a welcome piece of serious theater delivered by solid actors and tight direction. See it before it’s gone."

KIMBERLY AKIMBO "In the mood to get seriously giddy? ... laugh out loud vehicle that keeps the audience in stitches even when the chips are down... this cast has chemistry written all over it... makes the production a delight.. a real side splitter - a must see in this reviewers opinion. The fact is, when the show was over the audience wanted more, way more. - The Provincetown Banner. "Talented cast" Cape Cod Times
ANNA IN THE TROPICS " "Counter Productions has again created just the right look for a show, with the factory room setting created by Nathaniel McKean's tall light-wood walls and glassless window frames, with tropical period costumes of white suits, white shoes and filmy dresses. The cast does a laudable job with Cuban accents, coached by Angie Galiano. Director Susan Grilli conjures the anger and explosiveness of some characters in spades, especially from Justin Campbell, whose ambitious Cheche, stepbrother to boss Santiago, is thwarted in love and business and frustrated by his failures. His dangerous dissatisfaction is palpable… Another highlight is an argument, then reconciliation, between not-always-reliable Santiago (John G. Keller) and his fiery, domineering traditionalist wife, Ophelia (Glynis Bell). Both actors are excellent at portraying the nuances of a long-married couple. …philandering husband Palomo (a terrific acting debut by charter-boat fishing captain James Shannon)
When Nilo Cruz penned “Anna in the Tropics,” now playing at The Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford St., he ignited a Pulitzer Prize-winning symbolic fire on stage that just keeps building until a final burst of flames flares in a powerful dance of will. Then, in the flash of an instant, poof, they’re out, and all the characters’ lives have changed forever, including those in the audience who are drained from this dramatic offering — hot, hot, hot. Susan Grilli, head of the production company Counter Productions, who has ably led her cast on a dramatic adventure that coaxes the audience on a trip back to the first quarter of the 20th century when an industrial tug of war was in full force. With little sub plots and undertones, this play moves along smoothly and never bogs down." Provincetown Banner
